There is a moment on every wedding morning when the house goes quiet. The hair is done, the flowers have arrived, and someone at the window says the words everyone has been waiting for: the car's here.

What happens next depends almost entirely on timings you set weeks earlier. Get them right and the car becomes the calmest part of your day. Get them wrong and you spend your ceremony wondering whether the photographer got the shot.

The short answer

Your wedding car should arrive about 15 minutes before you plan to leave, get you to the ceremony five to ten minutes early, and allow 15–20 minutes for photos with the car afterwards. A standard three-hour booking covers the pickup, the ceremony, the waiting time and the transfer to your reception for most UK weddings.

What does a wedding car timeline look like?

A wedding car timeline is the schedule your chauffeur works to on the day: when the car arrives, when you leave, where it stops and when the booking ends. Every wedding is different, so the easiest way to build one is to work backwards from your ceremony start time.

Here is the standard order of a chauffeur-driven wedding car booking, and how much time to give each step.

Standard wedding car timeline
StepWhen it happensTime to allow
1. Car arrives at your doorBefore you plan to leave15 minutes
2. Drive to the ceremonyAfter doorstep photosDrive time + 50%
3. Arrive at the venueBefore the ceremony starts5–10 minutes early
4. CeremonyThe car waits nearbyLength of your service
5. Car photosStraight after the ceremony15–20 minutes
6. Drive to the receptionAfter photosDrive time + 50%
7. Booking endsAfter you arrive at the receptionKeep 30 minutes spare

How do you work out your own wedding car timings?

Use this simple rule: leave home at your ceremony start time, minus your drive time plus 50%, minus 10 minutes. Then book the car to arrive 15 minutes before that.

For example, with a 1pm ceremony and a 20-minute drive:

  1. Car arrives

15 minutes before you leave, for doorstep photos and a calm walk out.

  2. Leave home

    1:00pm − 30 minutes (20-minute drive + 10 minutes buffer) − 10 minutes.

  3. Arrive at the ceremony

Ten minutes early. You wait in the car while the guests settle.

  4. Ceremony begins

The car waits nearby, ready for photos and the transfer.

  5. Booking ends

    Three hours from arrival.

A standard three-hour booking from 12:05pm runs until 3:05pm. That usually covers a civil ceremony, car photos and a short transfer to the reception, with time to spare. Religious services often run longer, so if you are marrying in a church, temple, mosque or gurdwara, ask your chauffeur whether you need an extra hour. Our guide to wedding car hire prices in the UK shows how extra hours affect the cost.

The spare time at the end is not waste. It absorbs a slow registrar, a stuck zip or a group photo that takes three attempts.

How early should the wedding car arrive?

Plan for the car to arrive around 15 minutes before your first departure. Many operators start the booked hours from that point, so it is already built into a standard package.

Those 15 minutes do a lot of work. Your photographer gets the doorstep shots. Your chauffeur checks the route one last time. You get a dress, a veil and a bouquet into a car without anyone saying "hurry".

If the bridal party travels in stages, with bridesmaids first and the bride second, ask whether the car will make two runs. Each run adds time, and time is what you pay for.

How much buffer should you add to the journey?

Add at least 50% to the normal drive time for a Saturday wedding. If a map app says 20 minutes, plan for 30. In central London, or on a route past a football ground on match day, add more.

This is the most common timing mistake. Couples check the route on a quiet Tuesday evening and assume Saturday lunchtime will match. It rarely does.

A good chauffeur checks the route in advance, including roadworks, closures and events near your venue. With RK1's wedding car hire in London, the route is planned personally around your ceremony and photographer, and agreed with you on WhatsApp before the day.

Should the bride arrive late to the ceremony?

No. Aim to arrive five to ten minutes early, then wait in the car. The "fashionably late" bride is a lovely tradition, but it carries real risk.

Register offices and many churches schedule ceremonies back to back. A late start can shorten your service or push your photos into someone else's slot. Arriving early and waiting in the car gives you the same dramatic entrance without the gamble.

Arrive early, make them wait a moment, then step out. You get the entrance and keep the schedule.

Those few minutes in a parked car are also underrated. It is quiet, it is private, and it is often the last calm breath before the aisle.

What does the car do during the ceremony?

In most packages, the car waits at or near the venue throughout the ceremony. Waiting time is normally included in a standard three-hour hire, but always confirm it in writing.

While you say your vows, your chauffeur is working. They move the car into the best position for your exit, keep it clean and ready, and agree with the photographer where the light is best.

If your venue has limited parking, ask the chauffeur to check it in advance. Knowing where the car will stand saves a scramble when the doors open.

When should you take photos with the car?

Take car photos straight after the ceremony, while the confetti is still falling and the light hasn't moved. Allow 15–20 minutes and tell your photographer this is on the plan.

There are three moments worth capturing:

  • The departure: stepping out of your front door and into the car.
  • The arrival: the door opening at the ceremony venue.
  • The couple shot: the two of you beside the car, just married. A standout car like a Lamborghini Urus wedding car makes this the shot guests remember.

If you want portraits at a separate location, such as a park or a landmark on the way to the reception, build that stop into the timeline now. A 20-minute photo stop is easy to plan. It is much harder to squeeze in on the day.

Do you need the wedding car for the evening?

Only if you are leaving the reception for somewhere else, such as a hotel or the airport. Most couples book the car for the ceremony and reception transfer, then arrange a separate evening pickup if they want one.

An evening going-away car is usually quoted as its own booking, much like standard chauffeur hire in London, because keeping a car and chauffeur on standby for six hours costs far more than two separate trips. Ask your supplier to price both options side by side.

What happens if the wedding runs late?

You will usually pay overtime once your booked hours end. Overtime typically runs £75–£225 per hour, depending on the car.

That is why the spare time at the end of your timeline matters. Before you book, ask two questions:

  • What is the overtime rate, and is it charged by the hour or part-hour?
  • Does the chauffeur have another booking straight after mine?

The second question is the one couples forget. A chauffeur who has to leave for another job cannot wait, however much you are willing to pay. RK1 Chauffeurs runs one car and one dedicated chauffeur, so there is no other booking pulling the car away mid-afternoon.

What should you send your chauffeur before the day?

Send your chauffeur a one-page brief about a week before the wedding. It should answer every question they might otherwise have to ask you on the morning.

  • Full pickup address, with parking notes or gate codes
  • Ceremony venue address and start time
  • Reception venue address
  • Any photo stops, with rough timings
  • Name and number for a day-of contact (not the couple)
  • Your photographer's name and number
  • How many passengers, and who travels when
  • Any ribbons, music or special requests

Name a day-of contact who isn't you. On the morning, you should be having your makeup done, not answering a call about gate codes.

The same brief works for any occasion with a chauffeur, from prom car hire to event car hire for birthdays and proposals.

Frequently asked questions

What time should the wedding car arrive at the bride's house?

Plan for the wedding car to arrive about 15 minutes before you intend to leave. That gives time for photos with the car and for getting a dress and bouquet settled without rushing.

How long is a standard wedding car booking?

Three hours is the standard wedding car booking in the UK. It usually covers the pickup, the drive to the ceremony, waiting during the service and the transfer to the reception.

Does the wedding car wait during the ceremony?

Yes, in most packages. The car waits during the ceremony so it is ready for photos and the onward journey. Confirm the waiting time is included when you book.

Should the bride arrive late to her wedding?

Arriving a few minutes late is a tradition, but it is risky. Registrars and churches often have bookings straight after yours. Aim to arrive five to ten minutes early and wait in the car until everyone is ready.

What happens if the wedding runs over the booked time?

Most operators charge overtime once your booked hours end, typically £75 to £225 per hour depending on the car. Agree the overtime rate in advance so a long photo session doesn't bring a surprise bill.
